Meg was the bright spot of these sixteen weeks of intensive training; even though there was a lot of busted lips and bloody noses, hand to hand training wasn’t the worst of it. Intelligence training was one of the most grueling and mind-bending exhausting things Nina had ever endured. This training was not for the faint at heart and definitely not for someone that was wishy-washy. At least eight recruits quit during training, they just couldn’t take it. But these sixteen weeks only made Nina stronger and more self-assured of what she was designed to do and where her passions lie.
During Nina’s tours to the Middle East during her military career, she had seen so much violence and killing because of terrorism. She wanted to be a part of the elite HRT, FBI Hostage Rescue Team. This was the full-time FBI counterterrorist tactical team. Nina wanted to be a part of the team that provided the protection against terrorist attacks. To keep the United States free from its tentacles. Nina wanted to be in the trenches, fighting a war that mattered. What she didn’t want was to be tied down. She really cared about Meg, but wasn’t ready to commit herself. She wanted to give everything she had to the job. She hoped that Meg wasn’t too serious because even though they talked about Nina being assigned in DC; she was actually flying out to Seattle for extensive training in counterterrorism the day after graduation.
The night before graduation Nina spent with Meg. She had a whole speech ready to tell her about Seattle. But what she didn’t know was that Meg was serious about them and she made tentative plans about an apartment for them at Westbrooke Place. The place was stunning, very posh and elegant a luxury apartment in DuPont Circle, a perfect place for them. There was a state of the art gym, large community pool, perfect for early morning laps. Roof top garden and seating for relaxing in the sun, reading or just admiring the beauty of DC. Nina had remarked about the apartment complex the weekend they were in the city and Meg wanted to surprise her the day after graduation with a beautiful apartment. She had put a deposit down on a one bedroom that was recently renovated with new stainless steel appliances and hardwood floors. It had an oversized walk-in closet and a private balcony with a view of Rock Creek Park. Meg could barely contain herself, but something was different with Nina that night. She seemed quiet and somber.
Meg’s mind was reeling with excitement of the future as she lay there naked on her bed with Nina draped half over her torso. Meg pulled her fingers through Nina’s strawberry locks, her heart pounding with nervous anticipation. She was ready to make her declaration and surprise Nina with the apartment. “Why are you so quiet tonight?” Meg asked as the excitement welled up in her.
“Hmmm, I don’t know. I guess…well, I guess I’m a little bummed about training being over.
